RICHARD HARRIS

ADM's Australia Writer / Photographer

Biography

I commenced SCUBA diving in Australia in 1979, and took up UW photography soon after using a Nikonos II and developing my black and white images in my father’s cellar. Since then I have used a number of housed film and digital cameras, currently enjoying a Nikon D200 in a Nexus housing supplied by Seaoptics in Adelaide. My passion is for technical diving using a mixed gas closed circuit rebreather to explore and photograph deep wrecks and caves. I have worked briefly as a diving instructor and an inshore commercial diver but now have a much more “sensible” job as an anesthesiologist and physician in diving medicine. This provides the funding for my diving addiction which seems to getting worse rather than better with time!

My “real” job has taken me around the globe and opened lots of doors in the diving world. Working in the UK, New Zealand and most recently Vanuatu has allowed me to dive and explore wrecks and caves in 11 countries. I am becoming more serious about my photography especially since the advent of dSLR cameras which make the exceptionally difficult environment of deep wrecks and dark caves, more amenable to getting “the shot”!

I am inspired by anyone who can take good photos in these hostile places and also dive safely. Martyn Farr, Gavin Newman, Leigh Bishop, Neil Vincent, Brad Sheard, Wes Skiles and Jill Heinerth are some of those that continue to amaze me with their efforts.

Future projects…continue to explore and photograph the caves of Australia, the little known war wrecks off the Australia coastline, and chase that elusive photo that I will be finally be satisfied with!
